Andreas Feininger

Andreas Feininger’s photo is one of Life magazine’s most recognizable covers and one of the most frequently reproduced photographs.

But what do we know about this photo?

The image first appeared in LIFE magazine in a June 1955 issue, four years after it was taken. The face of the photo belongs to young photographer Dennis Stock and holds a Leica. In the year of taking the photo Dennis Stock becomes a member of the famous Magnum agency and will then take the most famous pictures of James Dean.

This photo is from a series of stylized portraits of Feininger to show how the tools people use in their work become an almost indivisible part of their lives.
